Huskers lovers have witnessed this exact scenario previously during the previous four years.
There had been the Texas and USC situations in 2006, USC yet again in ’07, and then the Hokies last season in Lincoln, all having the same outcome – the “Huskers not prepared for primetime players.”
The last time the Huskers bested a ranked opponent on the road was in November ’06, when the Huskers beat then-ranked No. 24 Texas A&M, 28-27, at Texas.
However that was a separate era, a different coach, and, more or less, different athletes.
Every person knows that when you face a Frank Beamer team you can anticipate good execution on both sides of the ball, plus impressive play by special teams. They demonstrated that again in their 1st game this year versus Alabama.
The Crimson Tide outgained the Hokies by practically a two-to-one margin, although the team was only ahead by a field goal near the end of the 4th quarter due to a kickoff return for a touchdown.
The simple thing that Husker Nation has learned with this year’s franchise is that the botched assignments and out-of-position plays have virtually disappeared. There’s less thinking on the defensive side of the ball and as a result, more plays are being made because the athletes are reading and reacting instead of thinking.
Head coach Bo Pelini currently sees a franchise that fully gets the meaning of giving things their all.
This year, the franchise knows what it requires to be successful. It understands what its identity is on both offense and defense.
I really do feel that the Nebraska Cornhuskers have now broken through, and have the ideal players in the right positions pull off their first large away victory in 3 seasons.
I see the Huskers coming out on top in a low-scoring, tight contest in overtime by a 27-24 score.
