Sometimes known as the casino game with a funny name, the game of craps, does not in fact take its name from the expletives hurled out by losing players, but in fact from the French word “crapaud” meaning “toad”.
In casino craps, players play against a house, selecting 2 dice from a selection of dice offered by the stickman. Several rules apply when throwing the dice, for example they must hit the back wall, to avoid a “controlled shot”. Players bet on a playing surface and winnings are paid by the banker.
Players can bet the “pass line”, where they are betting on the person throwing the dice throwing a winning throw. If the thrower rolls a 7 or 11, all bets on the pass line are paid even money. And the thrower keeps rolling until they throw a losing throw. All players on the “pass line” lose if a 2, 3 or 12 is rolled. Players can also opt for a “don’t pass line” bet, where the reverse of the above is true.
If any other number is rolled (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10) , then that number is classed as “on” and the dealer places a marker on the relevant number. The thrower then continues to roll until either they roll the “on” number again, in which case everyone wins or until they roll a 7, in which case everyone loses.
More and more people have taken to playing online craps in recent years, although it doesn’t offer the same type of fun available at a craps table when everyone can win at the same time. However, the popularity of online craps is always growing because of its relatively easy playability. Let’s just hope they don’t have to look into the snake eyes too much.
