‘Social Media’ isn’t just a buzz word. It’s a firmly integrated part of the lives of millions of people all over the world. Whether for businesses, friends, networking or telling jokes, social media websites are proving phenomenally popular. But which are the biggest?

Well, there’s really no foundation to dispute the fact that Facebook is the most popular. In fact, data shows that at the present time, July 2010, Facebook has more than 500 million registered users across the world. Many people compare Facebook to an electronic year book type platform. People register, create a profile with information and photographs of themselves. They can then link their profiles with those of the people they know and contact others either publicly or privately, through private messaging. Users upload images and play games too.

Arguably, Facebook was the site that brought social media to the forefront of the Internet, attracting users who had previously not even spent much time online! There has been a controversy recently, however, with regards to the privacy policy.

The next site we will look at is Twitter. Twitter refers to itself as a ‘micro-blogging’ website, where users post little snippets and messages of 140 characters or less. Statistics show that in July 2010, the site has more than 100 million registered users across the world. Some people dispute how popular the site really is however, as some of these accounts are dormant. Others are automated, rather than human controlled. But in spite of the disputes about how active these users are, the site is phenomenally popular both with businesses and recreational users. Celebs are also making use the site to communicate with their fans.

So these are two of literally countless social media sites. However, there’s little dispute that they are the biggest at the present time. As more and more households get online, the popularity social media looks set to continue to soar.
